‘stranded in the Ahmedabad railway station.’
- ‘stranded’ has connotations of loneliness and unfamilairness/ at sea
- can be juxtaposed with the familair railway station
Partition
foodxwater
‘with food and water’
- they lack the basic survival items, showing the effect of the conflict
Partition
infinitynoise
‘She felt it was endless – their noise –’
- endless makes the noise seem infinite and by extension the effects of war are endless
- their groups them all together and dehumanieses them as they have no gender, no name
Partition
structure at the end
‘How could they /have let a man
/who knew nothing/ about geography/
divide a country?’
- badly done division of line shows the badly done and blunt partition of the country
- juxtaposition of man and country shows folly of size
Partition
eden cries
‘So she stood in the garden listening.’… ‘listening to the cries of the people’
- juxtapoisition of garden which presents tranquility and peace and cries
