Q

intramembranous ossification

A
  • no hyalin cartilage model precursor
  • mesenchyme –> bone (directly!)
  • flat bones mostly
  • begins week 8 of gestation in humans

Q

endochondral ossification

A
  • hyalin cartilage model precursor
  • mesenchyme–> hyalin cartilage –> bone
  • most short and long bones
  • present in all long bone by week 12

Q

bone growth length, 5 zones

A
  1. zone of resting cartilage
  2. zone of proliferating cartilage
  3. zone of hypertrophic cartilage
  4. zone of calcified cartilage
  5. zone of ossification

Q

zone of resting cartilage

A

closest to the epiphysis.
nothing is going on here.
chondrocytes sit in lacunae bythemselves

9
Q

zone of proliferating cartilage

A

chondrocyes undergoing mitosis.
as they do this they are forming isogenous groups. divide so they stack up like COINS. this division process pusshes the diaphysis away from the epiphysis, causes lengthening of the long bone. (also are producing matrix)

Q

zone of hypertrophic cartilage

A

chondrocytes sitting in lacunae start increasing in size (hypertrophy)
causes matrix to shrink and calcify.
when this happens chondocytes die. spaces open up

Q

bone width grown at two places

A

periosteal layer- osteoblast secret bone matrix

16
Q

what cells produce calcitonin

A

parafollicular cells

17
Q

what does calcitonin do?

A

inhibit reabsorption
inhibit osteoclast
increase activity of osteoblast
Ca blood levels go down

18
Q

increase blood calcium levels

A

parathyroid glands secrete parathyroid hormone.

causes osteoclast activity to increase
