ICE AND RAIN Protection Flashcards
Anti ICE
Wing Anti-ice switch: We have some planes with a rotary switch and others with an alternate action switch.
How is the WING Anti Ice used?
Use WING AI as a de-icer primarily.
How is the wing heated?
WING uses bleed air for the THREE outboard slats.
Can wing anti ice be used on the ground?
It is operated in flight only; inhibited on the ground.
The VALVE Light is a?
DISAGREE light.
What if we landed with the WING AI on?
The VALVE lights would illuminate;
DISAGREE; when the system turned itself OFF.
Some aircraft (-200’s and 477) have an AUTOMATIC WING and TAI system. How do we operate them?
We operate in MANUAL and use AUTO as a safety backup.
You get ATIS and the report says:
Calm, 01OVC 1/4mi FG5/5 2981
What System would you turn on and when?
ENG Anti-Ice,
after engine start
On the 200’s our Anti-Ice Panel has an auto mode which is selected to auto after engine start. If you encounter icing conditions in flight, do you leave it in AUTO?
No. For fleet continuity reason, select the ENG ANTI ICE to ON
On taxi out, the OAT is reported 2°c, what should your pilot action be?
Must complete an engine run up.
Every 30m
60%N1
For 30 seconds
And once before take off
The PITOT, AOA, and TAT discrete lights are on the overhead panel. When do they extinguish?
They extinguish when the first engine is started.
Are they all powered?
No. The TAT probe light extinguishes, but it is not powered until airborne
What are icing conditions?
10 C TAT on the ground or 10 C SAT in the air (or less) with visible moisture (vis < 1 mi) or slush, snow standing water
What is the difference between OAT, SAT and TAT?
OAT - Outside Air Temp is the temperature outside (ATIS)
SAT - Static Air Temp is basically the same, but OAT gauges are unreliable above 200 knots, so SAT is used
TAT - Total Air Temp is SAT + Ram Rise (the natural rise in temperature caused by friction in high speed flight
Where do we read SAT?
EICAS screen 1
What if ATIS said that the temperature was 12C but TAT (on the ground) was reading 10C. Would you turn the TAI on?
YES
