Metallic bonding Flashcards

1
Q

Explain metallic bonding

A
  • Metals bonded to other metals
  • Giant structure of atoms arranged in regular pattern
  • All atoms share their outer shell electrons with all atoms
  • Sea of delocalised electrons

Q

Why is metallic bonding very strong and leads to metals having high MP and BP?

A
  • Very strong electrostatic forces of attraction between negative electrons and positive metal ions
  • Lots of energy required to overcome
  • Very high MP and BP

Q

Why are malleable and why are they good conductors?

A
  • Delocalised electrons can carry charge = conductors of electricity and heat
  • Regular structure so layers can slide over one another = malleable

Q

What are alloys and why are they stronger than pure metals?

A
  • Alloy = mixing together 2 different metals with 2 different sized atoms
  • Different sized atoms disrupt the regular pattern and laters don’t slide over eachother
  • Much harder than pure metals
