Periodic table groups Flashcards

1
Q

What happens to the reactivity as you go down group 1?

A
  • Reactivity increases
  • Atomic size increases so furthest electron gets further away. So electrostatic force of attraction between positive nucleus and negative electron gets weaker and outer electron lost more easily

Q

What happens to reactivity going down group 7?

A
  • Reactivity decreases
  • Atomic size increases so furthest shell gets further away and shells cause shielding. Therefore, harder for nucleus to attract another electron and gain 1 electron
