what does the ressurrection mean
‘to rise again’
quote in which Jesus had warned his disciples but they do not need to fear
Matthew 1:8 ‘be not afraid of the one who can destroy the body but the one who can destroy both body and soul in hell’
-jesus had warned disciples them that they faced persecution but need not fear those that can only ‘kill the body’
-Soul- dualist approach (physical and spiritual)
-The One= God
Quote from John 20
the disciples recognise Jesus and receive the HS (20:22)
Quote from John 21
John 21:24 identifies author as disciple John- claims to be an eyewitness account
explain John 20 in reference to the ressurrection
-Background: predict written in 90AD by John, latest Gospel
-Highly structured (chiasm) and has 5 episodes (ABCBA)
-IN the 1st and last (A) risen Jesus doesn’t appear but people start to believe on evidence
-In second and fourth (B) Jesus appears to individuals who don’t recognise him
In middle C he imparts the HS to disciples- the disciples recognise Jesus and receive the HS (20:22)
-Can walk through walls
Resurrection is not the same as resuscitation- resurrected body is not the same- Mary Magdalene failed to recognise him (Luke 20), could walk through locked doors (John20)
explain John 21 in reference to the ressurrection
-Divided into 3 sections
-jesus appears to disciples by sea of Galilee- Jesus is standing on the shore and an abundant catch of fish next to the boat
Jesus commissions Peter to shepherd his people- Jesus commands ‘feed my lambs’
John’s testimony is confirmed- John 21:24 identifies author as disciple John- claims to be an eyewitness account
explain 1 corinthians 15 in reference to the resurrection
Written by Paul- had conversion on the road to Damascus where he met Jesus
Teaches the nature of the resurrected body will be different- will not be weak and perishable like the physical body we know
Uses the analogy of seed planting- body that is ‘planted’ in the earth is perishable, weak but the body that is raised is imperishable and strong
Who’s Bultmann
-german theologian
What does Bultmann state the resurrection is
resurrection= myth as involves supernatural events (need to be demythologize NT)
What is all that Bultmann said was necessary for Christian belief
Argued that all that is necessary for Christian belief is that Jesus lived, preached and died by crucifixion
What does Bultmann define a myth as- give an example
event which supernatural powers are at work
Example is the ancient belief in the ‘three tiered universe’- earth was a sphere with heaven above and hell beneath
describe Bultmann’s demythologising and myth
-Myth in past helped people understand world around them but myth is no longer helpful for modern readers which have tools of science
-Impossible for modern readers to believe in NT without discarding all modern intellect and knowledge
-Resurrection was not a historical event but a story designed to sustain faith
-Meaning of resurrection is still important as is important to christian belief but isn’t historical event
Who is Jesus according to Bultmann
Jesus is son of God, not in a literary sense but an expression of God
Explain Bultmann’s position on the resurrection
Belief in resurrection of Christ’s physical body in unnecessary to christian faith
Cannot accept resurrection with integrity as can’t be proved and doesn’t give meaning
The resurrection as demythologize brings the death of Jesus as a victory over the power of death
Therefore, the crucifixion contained the resurrection within it- there was no 2nd historical event
Victory comes through the cross
Therefore, what is easter about for Bultmann
Easter then is about not the rising of Jesus but the rise of the early church
What is the ressurection for Wright
a historical event
what did Wright argue
Argues resurrection marks the beginning of a restoration of creation- will be completed at parousia
Greek and Jewish thought differed before it- fact they both believed means must have happened
Wright: Jewish and Greek belief about life after death
Greek: Plato talks about afterlife for the soul but not bodily return- no evidence in Greek philosophy of bodily resurrection
Jewish: in OT belief of resurrection is ‘vague and unfocussed’- some Psalms express a post-mortem hope, based on God’s love going into the future- Israelites believed physical resurrection but conflicting thoughts if the body stays the same or not
From this background early xtians emerged saying 2 things: Jesus as messiah and this is proved as he’s been raised from the dead
Wright: Early xtian belief
There wasn’t any disagreement unlike Judaism- it’s not the return to the same body as before- it is a gift of a new body
Completely convinced Jesus’ resurrection was real
Evidence: Paul wrote to the church of Rome saying Jesus was declared the son of God as he rose from the dead
Wright: meaning of the resurrection
Jews would usually abandon ‘messiahs’ when they died- jesus’ didn’t stop so he must have come back to life
Other failed messiahs- Simeon ben Kosiba
In Gospels we see Jesus’ body isn’t just a ‘spiritual presence’ but is transformed
