explain the passages for ‘love thy neighbour’

A

leviticus 19
-From OT and refers to the time where Jews were persecuted by Egyptians
-God is reminding Jewish people to treat people from another land the same way they were treated
-One cannot love God without loving fellow humans
-In Deuteronomy 6- you shall love your lord your God with all your heart and all your soul- Sheema
-Holiness code- have to work towards holiness

Luke 10:25
-Merge of Leviticus 19 and deuteronomy 6
-Jesus says ‘love God and thy neighbour’ and the lawyer asks ‘who is my neighbour?’- Jesus replies with the parable
-Parable of man who is attacked and robbed from Jerusalem to Jericho
-2 Jewish leaders pass without helping but a samaritan stops and takes care
For Jesus ones ‘neighbour’ isn’t the one who lives next door but who we meet on life’s journey and everyone in need

Others- Matthew 22- ‘you shall love your neighbour as yourself’

-God loved humans first so we too must love God and others
-We should see God in everyone- true love of God includes love of humanity
-Links to atonement/ salvation- sacrificial love
