LAN
Local Area network. Usually contained within one building or a small geographical area.
WAN
Wide Area Network. Network covers a large geographical area.
Client-Server Model
network that uses separate dedicated servers and specific client workstations. All client computers are connected to dedicated servers.
Peer-to-Peer Model
network in which each node can share its files with all other nodes.
Thin Client
A device that needs access to the internet for it to work.
Thick Client
A device that can work both offline and online and can do some processing when not connected to the internet.
Bit streaming
contiguous sequence of digital bits sent over a network.
Internet
A massive network of networks that uses transmission control protocol (TCP)/ internet protocol (IP)
WWW
World Wide Network. Collection of multimedia webpages stored on a website.
Real-time bit streaming
used when watching a live stream of events currently taking place. The event is captured and live with a video camera connected to a computer.
On demand Bit Streaming
used when watching an event that has taken place in the past. Existing media are encoded to bit streaming format and uploaded to server.
Public IP address
An IP address that is assigned to a device to allow direct access to the internet
Static IP address
A fixed IP address that doesn’t change when a device rejoins a network
Private IP address
IP address used for internal LAN communications only.
Dynamic IP address
IP address that might refresh when a device rejoins a network.
