2. User Centered Design Flashcards
(18 cards)
What is the main goal of User-Centered Design (UCD)?
To make it accessible and usable
Fulfil user needs by providing an easy UI
Capture interest
What is a key principle of UCD?
Use an interative design process
USE USER FEEDBACK
The design team is multi-disciplinary
What should the design address in UCD?
The whole user experience
What drives and refines the design in UCD?
User feedback
What type of team is involved in UCD?
Multi-disciplinary team
What is the iterative design process sequence?
Design, prototype, evaluate, and redesign
When do we stop iterating in UCD?
When results are satisfying, usability goals are achieved, or until you run out of money
What is Rule 1 of User Design?
Know your user
How can users be categorized based on usage?
- Primary: frequent hands-on usage
- Secondary: occasional or via someone else
- Tertiary: affected by its introduction or will influence someone’s decisions
Why should we involve users in the design process?
To manage expectations and set realistic wants
Users are more likely to forgive problems if they are apart of the solution
What are personas in UCD?
Archetypes of actual users, defined by the user’s goals and attributes
What are the advantages of using personas?
- Convenient handle for talking about user classes
- Focuses on typical user rather than extreme
- Encourages empathy
- Quick and easy to make
- Consistent model for all team members
What are the disadvantages of using personas?
- May be misleading
- Stereotype trap
- Difficult to create for international audiences
- Too many personas can complicate work
- Risk of unsupported designer assumptions
What can goals in the context of personas be broken down into?
Tasks and subtasks
What factors should be characterized for each task of a persona in UCD?
- Frequency
- Time constraints
- How the task is learned
- What can go wrong
- Preconditions of the tasks
What does Rule 2 emphasize in UCD?
Environment plays a huge factor in UI perception
What are the four characteristics of the environment?
- Physical location
- Body position
- Access to help
- Surroundings
What is a significant challenge regarding the environment in UCD?
You have no control over the environment the user is in
