Chapter 6- Cardiovascular Diseases Flashcards
Internal lining of the smooth muscle of the heart
Endocardium
Circulatory system that delivers oxygen & nutrients; carries waste products
Heart
Thickened artery wall due to calcium deposits. ‘Hardening of the arteries.’
Arteriosclerosis
Lipid plaque accumulated on blood vessel walls
Atherosclerosis
Fatty deposits in the walls of arteries
Plaque
A deficiency of blood supply to any organ. Dead tissue.
Ischemia
Disease due to arteriosclerosis and/or atherosclerosis
Coronary Artery Disease
Dead tissue that occurs due to lack of blood flow
Infarction
temporary chest pain or sensation of chest pressure caused by transient oxygen insufficiency
Angina pectoris
CPR
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
Agents that dissolve blood clots
Thrombolytic
A procedure where a balloon catheter is inserted into the coronary arteries and expanded to break and crush plaque
Angioplasty
A serious heart condition in which the rt side of the heart fails as a result of long standing chronic lung disease
Cor pulmonale
A bluish color of the skin due to lack of oxygen
Cyanosis
Constriction or narrowing of a passage or orifice
Stenosis
Difficult or labored breathing
Dyspnea
A narrowing of the aorta
Coarctation
Fainting caused by insufficient blood flow to the brain
Syncope
Disease caused by strep throat that causes permanent damage to the valves
Rheumatic Heart Disease
Small nodular structures composed of bacteria and clots that form along the edge of cusps in the valve opening
Vegetations
Tiny red or purple spots caused by minute blood vessels that rupture in the skin
Petechiae
The forming of blood clots on blood vessel walls
Thrombosis
A blood clot that forms in a blood vessel
Thrombus
undissolved material carried by the blood and impacted in some part of the vascular system,
Embolus
A localized dilation caused by a weakening in the wall of a blood vessel
Aneurysm
An inflammation of a vein, usually in the leg
Phlebitis
Distended vein showing up on the surface of the skin
Varicose veins
Anal varices
Hemorrhoid
elevation of the blood pressure, especially the diastolic pressure.
Hypertension
Impulses are prevented from flowing from the atria to the ventricles because of a damaged route (ie MI) and thus the heart rate and EKG are altered
Heart Block
