2.1 - DNA and RNA Flashcards
(15 cards)
RNA structure
a single stranded molecule of one polynucletide strand - much shorter than DNA strands
What is RNA composed of? (3)
ribose
AUGC base
phosphate group
What are purines and pyrimidines?
- larger bases that contain two carbon ring structures (Adenine and Guanine)
- smaller bases that contain one carbon ring structure (Thymine and Cytosine)
What does weak hydrogen bonds allow for?
allows strands to separate in DNA replication
What does complementary base pairing allow?
accurate DNA replication
What does a double helix allow for?
makes the molecule compact
What does a large molecule do?
stores a lot of information
What does a double strand do?
acts as a template in DNA replication
What does a sugar-phosphate backbone do?
protects coding bases on the inside of the helix
How are phosphodiester bonds broken?
Hydrolysis reactions - releases the nucleotide monomers
What does a chain of phosphates and sugars form?
a sugar phosphate backbone
Main components of nucleotides (3):
Pentose sugar
Nitrogenous base
Phosphate group
What are the subunits of DNA and RNA?
nucleotides are the monomers and can form dinucleotides and polynucleotides
