2.3 - ATP Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
Uses of ATP in the body (5):
A
- movement and contraction of muscles
- molecules requiring active transport to move against the conc gradient
- synthesis of large molecules
- secretion of substances from cells - releasing hormones from glands
- Phosphorylation of molecules - makes them more reactive
2
Q
Structure of ATP (3):
A
- a nucleotide derivative
- contains adenine, ribose and 3 phosphate groups
3
Q
What is ATP?
A
a molecule involved in energy transfer
4
Q
ATP reactions (2):
A
- Hydrolysis - addition of water to break ATP into ADP and Pi - catalysed by ATP hydrolase - releases energy
- condensation - removal of water to form ATP from ADP and Pi - catalysed by ATP synthase - requires energy and traps chemical energy in the bond
5
Q
Properties of ATP and its relation to its function (6):
A
- Hydrolysis of ATP releases a small amount of energy - little is lost as heat
- ATP is broken in one step - its quick
- ATP is rapidly resynthesised - readily available
- Pi can phosphorylate other compounds - more reactive
- bonds between phosphates are unstable - easily broken (low Ea)
- ATP is soluble - easily transported
