Two processes of growth:

Active division of cells

Expansion of individual cells

What are the two types of meristems and what do they do?

Apical

Lateral

Meristems are the site of active cell division and growth in a plant

Features of apical meristem?

Occur at growing tips of roots or shoots

Gives height above ground

Gives depth below ground

Primary growth

Leads to formation of permanent tissue.

Features of lateral meristem?

Allow stems / roots to increase in girth

Secondary growth (aka secondary thickening)

Associated with a tissue called cambium

In a woody dicot stem, cambium is arranged in a ring just underneath the bark
