What is goal setting?
A strategy to reduce social loafing, and improve team cohesion
What are the benefits of goal setting?
> provides a direction for our efforts
increasing motivation
promotes task persistence
increases self confidence
reduces anxiety
improves selective attention
What are the different types of goals?
> objective/subjective
outcome/task oriented
performance/process
realistic/aspirational
short/medium/long term
What are objective goals?
Judgement of success is factual - not influenced by feelings or opinions.
> numbers
What are subjective goals?
Judgement of success is influenced by personal feelings or opinions
> ‘being the best’
What are outcome/product goals?
Concerned with the end product (success based).
> involves comparison with others
> improves motivation
> failure can lead to anxiety
What are task-oriented goals?
Goals based on task, not just outcome.
> improvements of technique/overall performance
> less comparison with others
> can be a performance or process goal
What are performance goals?
> Judged against previous performances - improve personal achievements.
Usually measurable - objective
What are process goals?
Centred on the technical elements that underpin a performance
> serves as a base and influence performance goals
What are realistic goals?
Set with a sensible idea of what can realistically be achieved in the set time scale
What is an aspirational goal?
Goals designed to push the athlete beyond their limits - seem beyond capabilities
What does SMARTER stand for?
Specific
Measured
Achievable
Realistic
Time-bound
Evaluate
