Arteries Of Proximal Upper Limb Flashcards

Q

Thyrocervical trunk

A

Origin: anterior surface of first part of subclavian artery
Ascends as a short trunk often giving rise to two branches: inferior thyroid artery and cervicodorsal trunk
Arising from cervicodorsal trunk are suprascapular and dorsal scapular arteries

Q

Internal thoracic

A

Inferior surface of first part of subclavian artery
Posterior to Sternal end of clavicle and first costal cartilage
Enters thorax, gives rise to perforating branches, anterior intercostal, musculophrenix and superior epigastric

Q

Suprascapular

A

Origin: thyrocervical or as a direct branch of subclavian artery
Passes infero laterally crossing anterior scalene muscle, phrenic nerve, subclavian artery and brachial plexus, running laterally posterior and parallel to clavicle
Next passes over transverse scapular ligament to supraspinous fossa
Then lateral to scapular spine deep to acromion to infraspinous fossa on posterior surface of scapula

Q

Superior thoracic

A

First part of axillary artery
Runs anteromedially along superior border of pectoralis minor, then passes between it and pectoralis major to thoracic wall;
Helps supply 1st and 2nd intercostal spaces and superior part of serratus anterior

Q

Thoraco-acromial

A

Second part of axillary artery
Curls around superomedial border of pectoralis minor, pierces costocoraxoid membrane (Clavipectoral fascia)
Divides into four branches, pectoral, deltoid, acromial, and clavicular

Q

Lateral thoracic

A

Second part of axillary artery
Descends along axillary border of pectoralis minor
Follows it onto thoracic wall, supplying lateral aspect of breast

Q

Circumflex humeral (anterior and posterior)

A

Third part of axillary nerve
Encircle surgical neck of humerus, anastamosing with each other laterally
Larger posterior branch traverses quadrangular space

Q

Subscapular

A

Third part of axillary artery
Descends from level of inferior border of subscapularis along lateral border of scapula, dividing within 2-3 cm into terminal branches, the circumflex scapular and thoracodorsal arteries

Circumflex scapular

A

From subscapular artery

Curves around lateral border of scapula to enter infraspinous essay anastomosing with suprascapular artery

Q

Thoracodorsal

A

From subscapular artery

Continues course of subscapular artery, descending with thoracodorsal nerve to enter apex of latissimus dorsi

Q

Profunda brachii artery

A

Near its origin and near middle of arm of brachial artery
Accompanies radial nerve along radial groove of humerus, supplying posterior compartment of arm and participating in peri- articular arterial anastomoses around elbow joint
