(14 cards)
What is a carpel?
The female reproductive part of a flower, made up of stigma, style, and ovary. It produces ovules and facilitates fertilization.
What is a fruit?
A mature ovary that protects seeds and aids in their dispersal.
What is a hypha?
A threadlike structure of a fungus that absorbs nutrients from the environment.
What is mycelium?
A network of hyphae that forms the main growing structure of fungi, responsible for nutrient absorption.
What is mycorrhiza?
A symbiotic relationship between fungal hyphae and plant roots that enhances water and nutrient uptake.
What is an ovule?
Contains the female gametophyte; after fertilization, it becomes a seed.
What is an ovary?
Part of the carpel that houses ovules; it develops into a fruit after fertilization.
What are sepals?
Leaf-like structures that protect a developing flower bud.
What is a sporangium?
A structure in fungi and some plants where spores are produced.
What is the stigma?
The sticky surface at the top of the carpel that captures and holds pollen.
What is the role of pollinators?
Pollinators transfer pollen from the male parts of a flower (anther) to the female parts (stigma), enabling fertilization and seed production.
What are typical plant features that attract pollinators?
- Brightly colored petals
- Strong or sweet fragrances
- Nectar production
- Specific flower shapes (like tubular forms for hummingbirds)
- UV patterns visible to insects like bees
What is plant biodiversity?
The variety of different plant species within an ecosystem or the entire planet, including differences in genetics, species, and ecosystems involving plants.
How is plant biodiversity negatively impacted?
- Habitat destruction (deforestation, agriculture)
- Climate change (altering growth conditions)
- Invasive species outcompeting native plants
- Pollution (soil, water, air)
- Overharvesting and unsustainable agriculture
