Ho Chi Minh
Vietnamese communist leader who fought the Japanese in World War II, the French until 1954 and South Vietnam/U.S. until his death in 1969.
Domino Theory
A theory that if one nation comes under communist control, then neighboring nations will also come under communist control.
Ho Chi Minh Trail
A network of jungle paths winding from North Vietnam through Laos and Cambodia into South Vietnam. It was used as a military route by North Vietnam to supply the Vietcong during the Vietnam War.
guerilla warfare
A hit-and-run technique used in fighting a war; fighting by small bands of warriors using tactics such as sudden ambushes.
North and South Vietnam
North Vietnam(communist) and South Vietnam(non communist) split after the French left in 1954. America wanted them to stay divided because it was afraid if they got back together they would turn all communism. U.S. wanted south Vietnam to stay non-communist.
Gulf of Tonkin Incident/Resolution
A resolution passed by Congress in 1964 in the wake of a naval confrontation in the Gulf of Tonkin between the U.S. and North Vietnam. It gave the president virtually unlimited authority in conducting the Vietnam War.
Viet Cong (VC)
South Vietnamese communist rebels who used guerilla warfare to try to defeat South Vietnam.
Napalm
Highly flammable chemical dropped from US planes in firebombing attacks during the Vietnam War.
Agent Orange
A toxic leaf-killing chemical sprayed by U.S. planes in Vietnam to expose Vietcong hideouts.
Fighting conditions in Vietnam
Terrain: swamps, mountains, jungles, and rivers and tortuous ridges
Climate: furnace-like heat, drenching humidity, and choking dust. Monsoons produced torrential downpours and flash floods.
Tet Offensive (1968)
A massive, coordinated Communist assault against more than 100 cities and towns in South Vietnam.
