29 Flashcards
(67 cards)
Central Nervosus System
- Brain
- Spinal cord
-Control center, processing information and generating responses.
Peripheral Nervous Sysem
- Nerves
- Ganglia
- Sensory and motor
impulses from the skin and other organs to the spinal cord.
Brain Parts
- Cerebrum
- Cerebellum
- Brainstem
Cerebrum
- Voluntary motor function
- Conscious thought
- Contains about 75% of the brain’s total volume
- Divided into two hemispheres with four lobes
Cerebellum
- Coordinates balance
- Body movements
Brainstem
- Automatic functions
- Consciouness
- Most protected part of CNS
Spinal Cord
Structure of nervous tissue that extends from the base of the brain
- Carries messages between the brain and the body via the grey and white matter of
the spinal cord
Meninges
Protect and support the central nervous system
- Has 3 layers (DAP)
Dura Matter
The tough, outer layer that is attached to the skull
Arachnoid Matter
A thin, web-like layer that lies between the dura mater and pia mater.
Pia Matter
Delicate, innermost layer that closely adheres to the surface of the brain and spinal cord.
Cerebralspinal Fluid (CSF)
Protects brain + SC
- Acts as shock absorber
- 125- 150 mL
- Produced in third ventricle
2 Types of Peripheral Nerves
- Sensory Nerves
- Motor Nerves
Sensory Nerves
Transmits sensory information from the body to the central nervous system (Brain + SC)
Motor Nerves
Transmitting signals from the central nervous system (CNS) to muscles and glands
Somatic Nervous System
Voluntary Nervous System
Autonomic Nervous System
Involuntary Nervous System
- Divides into 2 systems (Para and Symp)
Skull
Composed of Cranium and Facial bones
4 Major Bones in Cranium
- Occipital
- Temporal
- Parietal
- Frontal
14 Facial Bones
- Maxillae
- Zygomas
- Mandible
- Orbit
Spinal Colum Vertebra
- Cervical- 7
- Thoracic- 12
- Lumbar- 5
- Sacral- 5
- Coccygeal- 4
Intervertebral Disks
Fibrocartilaginous structures that act as cushions between the vertebrae of the spine
Ecchymosis
Bruising
Mastoid Process
Bony projection at base of the skull, behind the ear
- Part of temporal bone
