Q

кремовый

The colour between white and yellow. It’s not light enough to be white and not bright enough to be yellow.

  • На мне было довольно длинное белое платье, такое кремового оттенка.
  • Используйте число белый или молочно-белый, слегка кремовый фон.
A

cream OR creamy (more UK),
beige /beɪʒ/
off-white

We could just use the word ‘cream’ and it has the same meaning, but it’s common for British people to add the ‘y’ to the end.
It makes the word a bit more informal, and gives more of an approximation of the colour than a definitive description.

  • I had quite a long white dress, sort of creamy colour.
  • Use a plain white or off-white background.

Q

бирюзовый, цвета морской волны - общий, UK and US versions

  • Море сегодня приятного бирюзового цвета.
A

turquoise UK /ˈtɜː.kwɔɪz/ US /ˈtɝː.kɔɪz/bluey /ˈbluː.i/ green (UK), bluish UK
/ˈbluː.ɪʃ/ green (US)

Also, when talking about colours in English, it is common for British people to use the ‘y’ ending; especially when giving a rough description of the colour.

  • The sea is a lovely bluey green colour today.

In this sentence, you can see that the person is saying that the colour of the sea is somewhere between blue and green. This colour is often referred to as turquoise, but ‘bluey green’ is a more common way to say it in BrE.

Q

желтоватый

Описывая что мы используем -ish и когда -y?

  • Лампа дает теплый, желтоватый свет.
A

It’s also quite common to add ‘-ish’ to the end of colours. It functions in the same way as ‘y’.

Both ‘y’ and ‘ish’ are interchangeable, although

‘ish’ is more common in spoken English and it is used in more situations like
around a particular time, number, age, etc.:

• She was oldish - about 60, I’d say.

• We’ll start at sevenish.

• She must be 30-ish now.

• He had a sort of reddish beard.

We can also use just ish as a separate word, which means that something is not completely true or exactly right:

• “You drink about a bottle of wine a day?” someone said. “Ish,” he answered.

•Asked if he was happy with his performance in the game, he paused for a moment and said: “Ish.”

• We’ve got solid answers for 10 of the questions and sort of “ish” answers for a further 7.

‘Y’ is most commonly used for colours - цвета.

  • That lamp gives off a warm, yellowish light.
