what does corticosteroids do to skin?
thin skin
besides decreasing adrenergic effects in thyrotoxicosis, what do beta blockers do?
decrease T4->T3 conversion by iodothyronine deiodinase
what is the fxn of perchlorate and pertechnetate
inhibit Na/I channel (reduce I uptake) in thyroid)
what is restless leg syndrome
urge to move legs, relief with movement. treated with dopamine agonists
drugs associated with serotonin syndrome?
antidepressants (SSRI, MAOinhibitors, TCA, 5HT, Norepi ireuptake inhib), tramadol, odansetron, linezolid, triptans
what are signs of serotonin syndrome?
hyprreflexia, clonus, rigidity
hyperthermia, tachycard, diaphoresis
agitiation and confusion
how does warfarin work?
inhibits vit K depenet CARBOXYLATION of GLUTAMIC ACID residues on clotting factors 2, 7, 9, 10
positive vs negative psychotic symptoms?
posotive: delusions and hallucinations
negative: social withdrawal, anhedonia, blunted affect, and poor initiative
what is clozapine
antipsychotic that acts on D4 NOT D2 receptors. Can cause life threatening agranulocytosis so need weekly WBC. Can also cause Seizures
treatment for alzheimers?
donepezil: cholinesterase inhibitors
vitamin E: antioxidant (alpha tocopherol)
memantine: NMDA receptor antagonists
major side effect of nitroprusside? treatment?
metabolized to cyanide and can cause cyanide toxicity. give sodium thiosulfate to treat the toxicity
treatment for essential tremor (familial tremore)…believed to be inherited in autosomal dominant fashion
