What is the purpose of the Incident Safety Officer SOG? (3)

A

1- to establish the minimum requirements for the ISO assigned during operation and provide direction for those assigned as such
2- These requirements apply to all fire suppression operations and those operations that are considered”Special Operations”
3- The establishment od an ISO in no way diminishes the need for all personnel to work in a safe manner.

Regarding the ISO the IC shall (list4)

A

1- Appoint an ISO whenever operational activities dictate the need for safety monitoring i.e. confirmed working structure fire, special operations, etc.
2- When appointing an ISO for an incident, consideration shall be given to the appointees experience, training and knowledge of firefighting operations and/or special operations that may be involved.
3- Appoint additional Assistant ISOs at the request of the ISO or when the IC determines scene conditions warrant such an appointment(s)
4- When possible, brief the ISO in the incident action plan.

The ISO shall: (list 10) *****

A

1- Be readily identifiable. Appropriately marked equipment(blue helmet and vest) may be found in the DC vehicle
2- Obtain a radio. The ISO shall monitor radio transmissions and stay alert to transmission barriers that may result in missed, unclear, or incomplete communications
3- Survey the emergency scene (using checklist) for the purpose of monitoring all ongoing operations and for to ensure the health and safety of all personnel.
4- Formulate a hazard risk assessment and provide corresponding info to the IC
5- Ensure dept. SOGs, polices and training practices are followed, as they relate to the health and safety of personnel.
6- when required, ensure air quality monitoring is conducted
7- oversee the operation of the Re-hab unit
8- Have the authority to alter, suspend, or terminate any activity they identify as unsafe that involves an imminent hazard to personnel. They shall the immediately inform the IC of the revised or terminated operation and the reasons for the operational adjustments. Preferably the communication shall take place face-to-face
9- Take whatever action is necessary, first through the Sector Officer or if required the IC to ensure the safety of personnel, when they identify a potentially unsafe operation where the danger is not imminent.
10- If possible. attend post=incident analysis of operations.
