What do managers do
Set objectives - targets for the organisation and employees to achieve
Plan - Create strategies to achieve the targets that have been set
Make decisions -
- E.g:
corporate (whole company)
functional (departments: finance, marketing, operations)
Analyse data and information - in order to make decisions and review progress
Types of management or leadership styles in a business
Authoritarian -> Decision making powers are kept at the top of an organisation
Democratic -> Decision making powers are not kept at the top of an organisation
Paternalistic -> Decision making powers are kept at the top of the organisation but decisions are intended to be in the best interests of the workforce
Laissez-Faire -> The leader has minimal input in the decision making process and leaves the running of the organisation to employees
What is an authoritarian leadership
AKA autocratic
Decision making powers are kept at the top of an organisation. Little use of consultation or delegation
Autocratic leaders prefer a HARD HR approach and favour McGregor’s Theory X
What is a democratic leadership
Decision making powers aren’t kept at the top of an organisation. Decisions are intended to be in the best interests of the workforce
What is a paternalistic leadership
Decision making powers are kept at the top of the organisation but decisions are intended to be in the best interests of the workforce
What is laissez - faire leadership
Leaders have minimal input in the decision making process and leaves the running of the organisation to the employees
What influences styles of leadership
- Organisational culture and history of the business
- The specific situation of the environment
- Skills and experieces of both the leader ad team
What is the Tannenbaum Schmidt Continum
Shows the relationship between the level of free given to employees in relation to decision making
