3.3 Flashcards
(7 cards)
1
Q
Enzymes
A
- Help lower Ea (use less energy)
- Help speed of reactions without being consumed in the reaction itself
- without enzymes, metabolism process would be really slow
2
Q
Enzymes as Catalyst
A
- Almost always proteins
- Act as catalysts
- Lowers activation energy, allows reactants to reach transition state more quickly
- allows products to form quickly
- Does not alter physical component of reactant
3
Q
Name of enzymes
A
- always written above arrow sign of a chem. equation
4
Q
Activation energy as barrier to chemical reactions
A
Activation Energy:
- energy required to start a reaction
- Energy need to break the bonds
Transition state:
- temporary state before new bonds are formed, and bonds are at breaking point
- Reaction will not take place until it reaches Ea
5
Q
What provides Ea
A
- Thermal energy
Ex. lightning hitting a tree to start a fire
- Can destroy structural composition of protein
- hard to regulate
- Enzymes
- Allows reactions to occur using less energy
-Can be regulated to control rates of reaction
6
Q
Lowing Ea with enzymes
A
- Amount of free energy of the reaction is unaffected
- Has no effect on products/reactants
7
Q
How do enzymes lower Ea
A
- Charged enzymes help break bond
- Help from reactants together
- Enzymes changes shape of substrate
