Q
The Packaging of DNA in Eukaryotes
A
- DNA is wound around histon proteins
- +vly charged histones are
attracted to -vly charged DNA - DNA wrapped around 8 histons = nucleosomes
6 nucleosomes = soloneids
Soloneids are super colloid into x-shaped chromosomes
2
Q
Prokaryotic DNA Organization
A
- Contains only one circular chromosomes
- No nuclear membrane = easy access
- Plasmids (smaller peices of DNA) flot throughout cell
- Conjugation allows plasmids
to exit one cell and enter
another - They use a supercoiling
- twisting of DNA to
reduce volume
3
Q
Telomeres: A key difference
A
- DNA replication results in small amounts
of lost DNA after each replication (on the
lagging strand) - Telomeres
- Repetitive and non-coding sequences
of DNA at the end of a chromosome - Protects coding regions (important
parts of DNA) from being lost during
replication
