Q

The Packaging of DNA in Eukaryotes

A
  • DNA is wound around histon proteins
  • +vly charged histones are
    attracted to -vly charged DNA
  • DNA wrapped around 8 histons = nucleosomes

6 nucleosomes = soloneids

Soloneids are super colloid into x-shaped chromosomes

Q

Prokaryotic DNA Organization

A
  • Contains only one circular chromosomes
  • No nuclear membrane = easy access
  • Plasmids (smaller peices of DNA) flot throughout cell
  • Conjugation allows plasmids
to exit one cell and enter
    another
  • They use a supercoiling
  • twisting of DNA to
    reduce volume

Q

Telomeres: A key difference

A
  • DNA replication results in small amounts
of lost DNA after each replication (on the
    lagging strand)
  • Telomeres
  • Repetitive and non-coding sequences
of DNA at the end of a chromosome
  • Protects coding regions (important
parts of DNA) from being lost during
    replication
