Ch3-P69-72 Flashcards
Broca’s area textbook
brain region that translates thoughts into speech or signs
Broca’s area wikipedia
functions linked to speech production.
The production of language has been linked to the Broca’s area since Pierre Paul Broca reported impairments in two patients. They had lost the ability to speak after injury to the posterior inferior frontal gyrus of the brain.
Paul Broca (1824-1880)
a French physician, surgeon, anatomist, and anthropologist
His work revealed that the brains of patients suffering from aphasia (disturbance in formulation and comprehension of language) contained lesions in a particular part of the cortex, in the left frontal region.
Phineas Gage
Large iron rod went through his head
Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS)
A technique for producing temporary inactivation of brain areas using repeated pulses of magnetic stimulation
Electroencephalogram (EEG)
A recording of the electrical activity of the brain
PET scan full name and what it is?
Positron Emission tomography. A brain image produced by a device that obtains detailed pictures of activity in the living brain by recording the radioactivity emitted by cells during different cognitive or behavioural activities
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
A technique for brain imaging that scans the brain using magnetic fields and radio waves
functional MRI
A brain imaging technique that combines benefits of both MRI and PET scans by detecting magnetic changes in the flow of blood to cells in the brain
Central Nervous System (CNS)?
part of nervous system containg the brain and spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)?
part of nervous system composed of the spinal and cranial nerves that connect the body’s sensory receptors to the CNS and the CNS to the muscles and glands
Somatic Nervous System?
subdivision of the peripheral nervous system that connects the central nervous system to the skeletal muscles and skin. Regulates actions of the body’s skeletal muscles. Voluntary control of body movements via skeletal muscles. Also called Voluntary Nervous System
Autonomic nervous system (ANS) textbook?
subdivision of the peripheral nervous system the controls the body’s involuntary motor responses
Autonomic nervous system (ANS) wikipedia?
The autonomic nervous system (ANS or visceral nervous system or involuntary nervous system) is the part of the peripheral nervous system that acts as a control system functioning largely below the level of consciousness, and controls visceral functions. The ANS affects heart rate, digestion, respiratory rate, salivation, perspiration, pupillary dilation, micturition (urination), and sexual arousal. Most autonomous functions are involuntary but a number of ANS actions can work alongside some degree of conscious control. Everyday examples include breathing, swallowing, and sexual arousal, and in some cases functions such as heart rate.
Sympathetic division of autonomic nervous system?
deals with emergency response and the mobilisation of energy. Fight or flight.
