4 L3 Superior Deep and Inferior Posterior Mediastinum Flashcards
(39 cards)
Where does the ascending aorta emerge from
The pericardial sac
What divisions of the mediastinum are the aortic arch and thoracic aorta located in
Arch- Superor Middle mediastinum
Thoracic- Inferior Posterior
Describe the path of the aorta
Emerges from pericardial sac - Aortic arch is sternal angle - Superior - Posterolateral (left) - Continues into the inferior posterior mediastinum
What are the ABCs of the aorta
Arch - Braciocephallic trunk - Left common carotid artery - Left subclavian artery
What division of the mediastinum is the Vagus nerve located in
Superior Middle, Inferior posterior
Vagus nerve functions
Parasympathetic innervation to thoracic and abdominal organs
Describe the vagus nerve’s passage through the mediastinum
Superior middle mediastinum (lateral to arch of aorta, left recurrent laryngeal nerve) - Passes behind lung roots into inferior posterior mediastinum
What does the vagus nerve contribute to in the inferior posterior mediastinum
Contributes to many plexuses- Cardiac, Left and right pulmonary, Anterior and posterior oesophageal plexus
Anterior and posterior vagal trunks- Travels through oesophageal hiatus in diaphragm
What division of the mediastinum is the trachea located in
Superior deep mediastinum- STAYS IN HERE
Trachea boundaries
Larynx to Primary bronchi
Describe the C-shaped rings including #, structure and function
16-20 C shaped rings - Hyaline cartilage - Prevents collapse - “Open” posteriorly- oesophagus
Describe the trachealis muscle
Smooth muscle - Runs longitudinally - Decreases diameter
Is the bronchi part of the superior mediastinum
No
Describe the bronchi
They enter lung at hilum - 1 Secondary bronchi for each lobe of lung - 1 Tertiary bronchi for each lobe segment
What does the oesophagus join
Pharynx to stomach
Describe muscle type of oesophagus
Cervical- Skeletal
Thoracic and Abdominal- Smooth muscle
What divisions of the mediastinum is the oesophagus located in
Superior Deep, Inferior posterior
Describe the oesophagus path through superior deep mediastinum
Narrowing behind aortic arch and left main bronchus
Describe the oesophagus path through inferior posterior mediastinum
Midline anterior to vertebral bodies - Aorta on left - Esophagal hiatus- Becomes oesophagul hiatus
Where does the oesophagus start
C6- Upper oesophagus opening
Describe the left recurrent laryngeal nerve
Left and right with different anatomy
Describe the path of the left left recurrent laryngeal nerve
Superior mediastinum - Ligamentum arteriosum - Arch of the aorta
Left recurrent laryngeal nerve boundaries
Trachea and esophagus to Larynx
Thoracic duct mediastinum division
Superior deep, Inferior posterior
