4.4 Chemical Changes Flashcards
(40 cards)
What is produced when metals react with oxygen?
The produce metal oxides
What happens when metals react with oxygen?
It oxidises since the metal has gained oxygen
What happens to metal when reacted with other substances?
The metal atoms form positive ions
What is the reactivity of a metal related to?
Its tendency to form positive ions
Where can metals be arranged in order of their reactivity?
In a reactivity series
What metals can be put in order of their reactivity from their reactions with water and dilute acids?
Potassium sodium lithium calcium magnesium zinc iron and copper
Which 2 non metals are often included in the reactivity series?
Hydrogen and carbon
What can a more reactive metal displace .
A less reactive metal from a compound
What does please stop calling me a cute zebra I lowkey can’t so god please stand for?
Potassium sodium calcium magnesium aluminium copper zinc iron lead carbon silver gold platinum
Where are y reactive metals found?
In the earth as the metal itself
How are most metals found?
As compounds that require chemical reactions to extract the metal
How can metals less reactive than carbon be extracted?
Reduction by carbon
What does reduction involve?
The loss of oxygen
What is oxidation?
The loss of electrons and gain of oxygen
What is reduction?
The gain of electrons and loss of oxygen
What does acid + metal produce?
Salts and hydrogen
How are acids neutralised?
By alkali’s and bases to produce salts and water and by metal carbonates to produce salts water and carbon dioxide
What is neutralisation?
The chemical reaction of an acid with a base in which a salt and water are formed .
What is an acid?
When dissolved in water its solution has a ph value less than 7 acids are proton donors
What is an alkali?
Its solution has a ph value more than 7
What does the salt produced in any reaction between an acid and a base or alkali depend on:
The acid used and the positive ions in the base
How can soluble be made from acids?
By reacting them with solid insoluble substances such as metals metal oxides hydroxides or carbonate
How is soluble salts made?
The solid is added to the acid until no more reacts and the excess solid is filtered off to produce a solution of the salt
What happens when a salt solution is crystallised ?
Produces solid salts
