- Psychodynamic Theory
Freuds
a collection of psychological theories that focus on the unconscious mind and its influence on behavior and personality
- Preconscious
the part of the mind that holds information, thoughts, and memories that are not actively in consciousness but can be easily recalled and brought into conscious awareness. (hold the name of your childhood pet, the location of a restaurant you visited last week, or the details of a past experience)
- Unconscious
Without our awareness, a reservoir of thoughts, wishes, memories, that are hidden from awareness because they feel unacceptable
(I dont know why I feel anxious but I do).
- Ego Defense Mechanisms
unconscious process to avoid anxiety
- Denial
refuse to believe something is happening (partner denies evidence of his gfs affair)
- Displacement
taking frustrations out on someone else (bad practice, yell at my mom)
- Projection
hipocracy, say something to another person that they are doing but really youre the one doing it (jack youre mean, but im really being mean)
- Rationalization
Self justifying excuse (An alcoholic says he drinks just to be sociable because everyone else drinks)
- Reaction Formation
Act in their opposites (If you like somebody you might act like you dont like them)
- Regression
People dont act their age (Little boy sucks his thumb on first day of school)
- Repression
pushing hurtful memories out of awareness (forgetting about a car accident)
- Sublimation
taking anger out in an healthy way (rage room)
- Projective tests
structured, systematic exposure to a standardized set of ambiguous prompts, designed to reveal inner dynamics, bringing the unconscious to preconscious to .conscious awareness
- Humanistic theory
perspective in psychology, emphasizes the inherent goodness of individuals and their potential for growth and self-actualization
- Unconditional Regard
the acceptance and support of an individual, regardless of their actions or thoughts
- Self-Actualization
the realization or fulfillment of one’s talents and potentialities, especially considered as a drive or need present in everyone.
