Define Biology
The study of life.
List the characteristics of life
Living things generally:
- Are organized
- Acquire materials and energy
- Reproduce
- Respond to stimuli
- Are homeostatic
- Grow and develop
- Have the capacity to adapt to their environment.
List the classification categories.
- Domain
- Kingdoms
- Phylum
- Class
- Order
- Family
- Genus
- Species
What are three domains?
- Domain Archaea
- Domain Bacteria
- Domain Eukarya
What is the process of science/the scientific method (list the design)?
Observation Hypothesis Experiment/observation Conclusion Scientific theory
What is scientific theory?
Many experiments and observations support a theory.
What is matter?
Anything that takes up space and has mass.
Which 6 (six) elements are basic to life?
CHNOPS:
Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulfur.
What are the subatomic particles that make up atoms and what is their respective charge?
P+, -N, -E
What is characteristic of radioactive elements?
They have an increased number of neutrons and they are unstable
What is an ionic bond?
Attraction between “+” and “-“ charged ions.
What is convalent bond?
When two atoms share electrons.
What are the unique properties of water that make it essential to the existence of life?
Water:
- Heat absorption
- High heat of vaporization
- It is a solvent
- Facilitates chemical reactions
- Inside/outside organisms
- Cohesive and adhesive
- High surface tension
- Ice is less dense than liquid water therefore it floats
What is characteristic of acids as it relates to H+ ions?
Increased H+ ion concentration
