4A- Roles of the Brain Flashcards
(13 cards)
Brain vs Heart Debate?
whether the heart or brain is repsonsible for MENTAL processes (T, F + B)
What is Tripartite Mind’s 3 sections? (LTE)
Logistikson- logic and reasoning
Thumas - spiritual aspects + feelings
Epithumetikon - responsible for desires + appetites
What is the mind- body problem
Explores the relationship between the mental processes (T, F, B) and the physical structures (of the brain) in determining whether the mind and brain are singular entities or the mind is a result of brain activity, being connected in the same system.
What is Monoism in the mind-body debate
(def)- the belief that the human mind + body are together a singular complex entity
What is Dualism in the mind-body debate
(def)- the belief that the human mind and body are separate + distinguishable from one another
What is Phrenology?
the studying of lumps and bumps on a person’s head allowing them to determine personality and behavioural traits
What are phrenology’s 3 key principles?
- Intellectual abilities and P traits –> dependent on the organisation of the brain
- The MORE developed these ‘organs’ (responsible for mental faculties) in the brain are, the LARGER they will be
- an anaylsised skull can be used to diagnose the intellectual + P traits of individuals
Brain lesioning definition
involves the damage of brain tissues in animals by surgery or illness in which creates changes in behaviour
Brain Ablation definition + what did it discover?
involves the surgical removal of brain tissues in animals followed by observation of changes in the animals behaviour
—> This showed evidence of different parts in the brain being responsible for different functions.
What evidence did the split-brain research produce? (2 things - HS and CO)
The hemispherical specialization - each side of the brain has different functions
The contralateral organisation - each hemisphere controls the other side’s voluntary movements and sensory information
Definition of Neuroimaging Techniques
Non-invasive methods used to visualise and study the structure and function of the brain, providing more information regarding brain injury/ damage.
What are the two types of techniques? (s + t) and its description for both
Structural techniques - PROVIDE info on what the brain LOOKS like
Functional techn- PROVIDE info on brain ACTIVITY
Name the 4 types of Neuroimaging :)
- CT- Computerised tomography
- MRI - Magnetic renosance Imaging
- PET - Positron emission tomography
- FMRI - Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging
