Normality
patterns of behavior that are typical and expected or that conform to standards of what is acceptable
abnormality
behaviors that are unusual, bizarre, atypical or out of the ordinary
Neurotypicality
standard or typical brain functioning, processing and behaviors
neurotypical
an individual whose neurological development or functioning is within the typical range
neurodiversity
the idea that every human has a unique nervous system with a different combination of abilites and needs
neurodiverse
not neurotypical; functioning outside the typical range of neurological development
adaptive
term used to describe emotions, behaviors and cognitions that enable enviro adjustment
maladaptive
a term used to described emotions, behaviors and cognitions that interferes with enviro adjustment
emotions
feelings that arise from our circumstances, mood or relationships with others
Maladaptive emotions
very intense or overwhelming emotions that occur frequently, for extended periods of time
Cognitions
cognitive processes or mental actions that involve acquiring, processing and understanding info or knowledge
adaptive cognitions
ways of thinking that are of benefit to our survival and wellbeing
Cognitive behavioral therapy
psychological treatment that targets the relationships between maladaptive, thoughts, feeling and behaviors
Maladaptive cognitions
cognitions distortions or irrational, inflated thoughts or beliefs that distort a persons perception or reality, usually in a negative way
Spectrum of Maladaptive Behaviors
Maladaptive behaviors range from less impairing (e.g., nail-biting) to severely impairing (e.g., self-harm).
Example: Nail-biting is a minor maladaptive behavior, while self-harm is a severe one.
