4B - Regions of Brain Flashcards
(10 cards)
Hindbrain
Lower region of the brain which controls or influences various motor functions and autonomic responses such as breathing and heart-rate.
Forebrain
Is the largest and most prominent part of the brain. It regulates complex cognitive processes such as thinking, learning, memory and perception as well as emotions and personality.
Midbrain
In the centre of the brain and contains neural pathways that connect upper and lower areas. It is involved with movement, processing visual, auditory and tactil sensory information, and sleep and arousal.
The Midbrain is made up of…
- Reticular Formation
-reticular activating system
The forebrain is made up of…
Made up of:
- Hypothalamus
- Thalamus
- Cerebrum
The Hindbrain is made up of…
Made up of:
- Medulla
- Pons
- Cerebellum
What is the Amygdala?
Described as the ‘emotion centre of the brain’ but it does not have exclusive control of emotion.
What is the hippocampus?
Involves the formation of new long-term memories
The cerebral cortex
It is involved in higher-order mental abilities like perception, learning, memory, language, thinking, and problem solving. It also processes sensory information and helps plan voluntary movements.
3 Functions of cerebral cortex
Sensory areas: receives and processes sensory information
Motor Areas: Initiates motor movements
Association areas: Complex functions that need information from different parts of the brain.
