(5 cards)
Concussion
A concussion is a type of brain injury caused by a hit to the head or sudden shaking. It can disrupt how brain cells work and may damage brain tissue.
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE)
CTE is a progressive and fatal brain degeneration thought to be caused by repeated blows to the head and repeated episodes of concussion. It is commonly found in ex-players of contact sports such as AFL.
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) symptoms
- memory loss
- mood changes
- personality changes
- erratic and impulsive behaviour
- motor impairments such as tremors
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) diagnosis and treatment
Diagnosis: currently no test for diagnosis
Treatment: no cure available, based around supporting the individual only
Why is CTE considered emerging research?
Because much about CTE remains unknown, and it has become an important topic of conversation, especially in relation to severe sporting injuries.
