1
Q

Target population
Accessible population
Representative sample

A

Group defined by researcher’s interests

Q

Probability sampling

Non probability sampling

A
  1. Odds of selecting a particular individual are known and can be calculated. Random process: every outcome equally likely
  2. Odds of selecting a particular individual are not known because pop unknown

3
Q

Simple random sampling

A

Probability
Each indiv in pop has equal chance of being selected
With/without replacement
Possibility of same result each time

Q

Systematic sampling

A

Selecting every nth name
Divide pop by sample size to get n
Principle of independence violated

Q

Stratified random sampling

A

Identify subgroups to be included in sample
Then select equal-sized random samples from each group
Combine groups into one sample
Downs: distorted picture of pop, not equal chance of being selected

Q

Proportionate stratified random sample

A
Subgroups identified
Determine proportions to pop
Proportionate samples obtained
True random sample

7
Q

Cluster sample

A

Individuals clustered in preexisting groups
10 classes of 30 third graders instead of 300 individuals
Quick large sample
Measurement can be done in groups, facilitating research project, in one session
Results may not be independent measurements (cheaters)

Combined-strategy sampling

A

Regions: stratified

Then classes: cluster

Q

Why are probability sampling techniques only used for small, contained populations?

A

Time consuming

Access to whole pop necc

Q

Convenience sampling

A

No randomness
Biased
Most used
Correction for bias with broad cross-section sample
Doesn’t work for sample from unique characteristics (music school)
Or provide clear description of how sample obtained

Q

Quota sampling

A

Subgroups equally represented in convenience sample
Establish quotas for individuals to be selected from subgroups
15 boys/15 girls for 30 preschoolers
Not same as stratified and proportionate stratified sampling because it’s not random selection from pop - it’s convenience
Aka convenience stratified sampling
