AP Bio Chap. 9 Flashcards
DNA Replication
Cell copies all of its DNA before it divides.
Interphase
3 Stages, during which a cell increases its mass, roughly doubles the number of its cytoplasmic components and replicates its DNA.
G1
gap of cell growth and activity before the onset of DNA replication.
S
Time of Synthesis (DNA replication).
G2
Second interval gap after DNA replication when the cell prepares for division.
Chromosome Number
Sum of all chromosomes in a cell of a given type.
Diploid
Chromosome number.
Bipolar Spindle
Dynamic network of microtubules form during nuclear division.
Prophase
(First stage of mitosis) Chromosomes condense and become visible in micrographs.
Metaphase
Aligning of the chromosomes midway between the spindle poles.
Anaphase
Interval when sister chromatids of each chromosome separate and move toward opposite spindle poles.
Telophase
Two clusters of chromosomes reach the spindle poles. Each cluster consists of the parental complement of chromosomes.
Cytokinesis
Process of cytoplasmic division (cell division).
Contractile Ring
Band of filaments (anchored to the plasma membrane).
Cell Plate
Vesicles and their wall-building contents start to fuse into a disk-shape (in plant cells, instead of cleavage).
