What are the seating limitations for a PAX with a disability who is unable to sit upright? (3)
- Must be seated in a window seat at the end of an evacuation route (Midpoint between 2 exits)
- Must not be seated in a row that is next to or immediately in front of an emergency exit
- The seat immediately behind the passenger’s is vacant.
What is an impairment?
The medical condition which is an actual injury, disease or other disorder which produces a reduction in physical or mental function.
Example: Damage to a spinal cord
What is a disability?
The restriction in a person’s functional capacity which results from an impairment.
Example: Loss of movement of lower limbs (due to an impairment of a spinal cord injury)
What is a handicap?
Describes the difficulty an individual may have functioning in an environment.
Example: Impossibility of entering a building with stairs. (Due to loss of movement of lower limbs (disability) which is a result of damage to the spinal cord (impairment).
What does ‘self-reliant’ mean?
Except for needs relating to safety, self-reliant means a person who is independent, self-sufficient and capable of taking care of all personal needs during flight and does not require assistance of a personal nature (ie. With eating, washroom facilities or administering medication)
What does ‘non-ambulant’ mean?
A person who is not capable of movement/displacement without assistance and who is not capable if exiting the aircraft without assistance.
What does WCHR mean?
- pax CAN ascend/descend aircraft steps
- CANNOT walk long distances
What does WCHS mean?
- pax CAN make their own way to the cabin seat (either independently of with the assistance of an agent)
- CANNOT ascend/descend aircraft steps
What does WCHC mean?
- completely immobile and cannot walk
- require lifting apparatus (Washington/Straight Back Chair) to get into seat
What is the recommended seat for a passenger in a wheelchair?
- a window seat.
- however not mandatory
- safety consideration- in an emergency, pax seated in aisle and middle seats will exit quickly providing space for the crew to assist the non-ambulatory pax
How many unaccompanied non-ambulant, self-reliant pax are allowed on board?

How many accompanied non-ambulance, self-reliant pax are allowed on board?
Unlimited
How many non-ambulant, non self-reliant pax are allowed on board?
Not accepted unless accompanied
What type of wheelchair does Sunwing accept?
- Electric wheelchairs with non-spillable batteries
- Aids with spillable (wet) batteries are not permitted
What ages of children does Sunwing accept as an unaccompanied minor?
- Between 5-11
- Under 5 not permitted
- If there is an onward transfer or changing of aircraft, service will not be provided
