Q

How do you prepare a sample of carbon dioxide?

A
  1. Set up dilute hydrochloride acid in a dropping funnel onto marble chips in a Büchner flask.
  2. The gas produced goes through tubing DOWN into a gas jar showing the upward displacement of air

Q

What are 5 ways that you can examine the properties of carbon dioxide?

A
  1. Note that it is a colourless, odourless, tasteless gas
  2. Place a lighted taper in the jar of carbon dioxide. Note that it goes out. Carbon dioxide does not support combustion
  3. Bubble carbon dioxide through a test tube containing limewater (calcium hydroxide) which turns milky. The reaction forms calcium carbonate or chalk
  4. Pour carbon dioxide DOWN onto a lit tea light. The candle extinguishes showing that carbon dioxide is denser than air and does not support combustion.
  5. Bubble carbon dioxide through water. Place blue litmus paper in the water which turns red showing carbon dioxide dissolves water to form a slightly acidic solution
