Q

Describe a titration experiment

A
  1. Set up dilute hydrochloric acid in a burette and 25 cm³ of sodium hydroxide solution in a comical flask (Acid Above, Base Below)
  2. Place the conical flask on a tile, add methyl orange which is yellow to the flask and take the reading of acid in the burette from the meniscus
  3. Slowly add the acid until one drop turns the solution red. When the indicator changes colour, stop the titration and take a reading from the meniscus of the volume of acid that remains in the burette to determine how much was added to the solution.
  4. Repeat the experiment without an indicator.
  5. Put the sodium chloride solution into an evaporating basin and evaporate the solution. Crystals are formed

Q

How is sulfuric acid formed?

A

When coal and oil are burned sulfuric dioxide is formed. It is a colourless choking gas that irritates our eyes a lungs. It dissolves in water to for, sulfuric acid

Q

How is nitric acid formed?

A

Car engines take in nitrogen and oxygen from the air. Car exhausts emit oxides of nitrogen. These oxides dissolve in water vapour in clouds to form nitric acid
