Chapter 6 Flashcards
Stage model of memory
A sequence of memory three stages sensory memory short-term memory and long-term memory
Levels of processing framework
Memory recall of stimuli as a function of the depth of mental processing. Stronger the memory traces the deeper it is
Semantic network model
A network that represents Lucians between concepts. Web branching off into different things
Serial position effect
The tendency of a person to recall the first and last items in a series best and middle ones the worst
Encoding specificity
Easier to remember if in a similar situation to what you learned it
Context effect
Anything in the environment could be a retrieval cue
Source memory
Memories are triggered by contextual information
Decay theory
New memories develop and dump at older ones if they are not being used
Inference theory
New memory takes over old and old takes over new
Long-term potentiation
Persistent strengthening of synapses based on recent patterns of activity
Dementia
Decline of memory that interferes with daily functioning in signal transmission between two neurons
Schema
Folders that store information based on its relationship to other information
Script
The skimmer for an event understanding of what we should counter in different situations
Retrieval
Re-accessing of events or information from the past currently stored
Memory
A mental process that enables us to acquire retain and retrieve information
