How common is Viral Hepatitis
Hepatitis A,B,C,D,E
Hep A is the most commonest cause of acute viral hepatitis but now less because of vaccination
Hep B is common and usually in Middle east africa east asia
Hep C is largely undiagnosed
Hep D 5% of Hep B have Hep D co-infection. cant replicate without hep B
Hep E recently recognised
Define Hepatitis
It is the inflammation of the liver caused by infection
Risk factors of acute hepatitis
- IVDU
- Alcohol abuse
- Poor hygiene
- Contaminated water/sewage workers
- Travel
- Bleeding disorders/blood transfusions
- MSM (men who have sex with men)
- Sexual promiscuity
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Needlestick injury/healthcare workers
Symptoms of Viral hepatitis
Prodromal Sx usually preceded by Jaundice
Vomiting and diarrohoea may follow with abdominal discomfort
Dark urine and pale stools may precede Jaundice
minimal hepatomegaly
occasional splenomegaly and cervical lymphadenopathy
Unspecific symptoms usually and confirmed by LFT
24yr old male presents with nausea, malaise, and jaundice. He returned 3 weeks ago from a holiday. O/E moderate hepatosplenomegaly and tender cervical lymphadenopathy. He has dark urine and pale stools.
