Q

Pre-hepatic causes of jaundice

A

Anything which causes an increased rate of RBC b/d
Disruption occurs before bilirubin has been transported to the liver

- sickle cell anaemia
- haemolytic anaemia

Q

Post-hepatic causes of jaundice

A

Pathology occurring after the conjugation of bilirubin in the liver.
DIsruption prevents bile from draining out of the GB and into the digestive system
Bile can’t escape into the 2nd part of the duodenum
- gallstones
- carcinoma of the head of the pancreas
- strictures of CBD
