5A-Photosynthesis Flashcards
(12 cards)
KEY TERM - Mesophyll cell
A type of plant cell found in leaves that contains a lot of chloroplasts, (holds the CO2/Malate in C4)
KEY TERM - Chloroplast
A membrane-bound organelle only found in plant cells, it’s the site of photosynthesis
KEY TERM - Chlorophyll
A chemical found in the Thylakoids of chloroplasts, responsible for absorbing light energy in photosynthesis
KEY TERM - Stoma (pl Stomata)
A small pore on the leaf’s surface that opens and closes to regulate gas exchange (letting O2 out, bringing CO2 in), and can close during the day to prevent waterloss
KEY TERM - Xylem
Vascular tissue in plants responsible for transporting water and minerals from the roots to the leaves.
The core inputs of Photosynthesis-
6 CO2 Molecules and 12 H2O molecules
KEY TERM - Photoautotroph
An organism capable of undertaking photosynthesis
KEY TERM - Photosynthesis
The process of capturing light energy to power the production of glucose and oxygen from carbon and water
Core outputs of Photosynthesis-
6 O2 molecules, 6 H2O molecules, and a gluecose molecule (C6H12O6)
Where does photosynthesis happen?
It happens in the chloroplasts, which are in the mesophyll cells
Light-dependent happens in-
The thylakoid membrane, which containes the chlorophyll
Light-independent happens in-
stoma, the empty space in the chloroplast
