6 - Cardiovascular (Panic version) Flashcards
(29 cards)
What is an artery?
A blood vessel which carries blood away from the heart.
What is an atrioventricular valve? What is its function?
Valve located between atrium and ventricle. Prevents backflow.
What is an atrium?
Superior heart chamber
What is a capillary?
The smallest and most common blood vessel. Gas and nutrient exchange occurs across the capillary walls.
What are the chordae tendinae?
Small cord-like tendons which act to open and close the atrioventricular valves
What is a lumen?
The inner space of a blood vessel or other tubular structure.
What is the mediastinum?
The cavity in the thorax which contains the heart, thymus and large blood vessels.
What are papillary muscles?
Small, cone-shaped muscles which act to open and close the atrioventricular valves
What is the pericardium?
The fluid-filled sac which surrounds the heart. Consists of fibrous outer pericardium and inner serous pericardium.
What is pulmonary circulation?
The blood vessels carrying deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle of the heart, to the lungs, and oxygenated blood to the left atrium
What are the semilunar valves?
Small, cup-like valves located in the pulmonary trunk and aorta.
Where is the right semilunar valve located?
Pulmonary trunk
Where is the left semilunar valve located?
Aorta
What is systemic circulation?
The system of blood vessels which carries blood from the left ventricle of the heart, around the body, and back to the right atrium of the heart.
What is a vein?
A blood vessel which carries blood towards the heart.
What is a ventricle?
Inferior heart chamber.
What is the visceral pericardium?
The inner membrane lining the heart, part of the serous pericardium.
What is the pH of blood?
7.35-7.45
What is the location of the heart?
In the thoracic cavity, in the mediastinum
Between 2nd rib -> 5th intercostal space
Trabeculae carnae are located in….
the heart’s ventricles
Pectinate muscles are located in….
the heart’s atria
What are the vessels bringing blood to the right atria?
Inferior vena cava
Superior vena cava
Coronary sinus
What are the vessels bringing blood to the left atria?
Left pulmonary veins
Right pulmonary veins
What is the main blood vessel removing blood from the right ventricle?
Pulmonary trunk
