7 - Urinary (Panic version) Flashcards
What is an afferent arteriole?
Small artery, carries blood into glomerulus of nephron.
What is a calyx?
Funnel-shaped structure. Tips of renal pyramids project into it.
What is a collecting duct?
Long, straight tubule. Drains filtrate from the distal convoluted tubule and into the calyces.
What is the distal convoluted tubule?
Convoluted tubule of the nephron, located between the loop of henle and the collecting duct
What is the efferent arteriole?
Small artery, carries blood out of glomerulus of nephron, and towards the peritubular capillaries.
What is filtrate?
Fluid which has entered the nephron through the filtration membrane of the glomerulus
What is the glomerulus?
Ball of capillaries, surrounded by the Bowman’s capsule
What is the loop of henle?
Looped tubule of the nephron which is located between the two convoluted tubules
What is the nephron?
Microscopic, functional unit of the kidney.
Approx. 1.3 million in EACH kidney.
What is the proximal convoluted tubule?
Convoluted tubule between the glomerulus and the loop of henle
What is the renal corpuscle?
The glomerulus and the Bowman’s capsule which surrounds it. Filtration occurs here.
What does it mean if something is “renal”?
It is related to the kidney
What is tubular reabsorption?
Movement of materials (e.g. water, glucose) from filtrate back into bloodstream.
Where does tubular reabsorption mostly occur?
Proximal convoluted tubule
What is tubular secretion?
Movement of unwanted materials from the blood into the filtrate for excretion.
What is the ureter?
Paired tubular structure, which carries urine from the kidney to the urinary bladder.
What is the urethra?
Tubular structure which carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body.
