60. Oesophagus - microscopic Flashcards
(33 cards)
How many main layers does the oesophagus wall have?
Four layers.
What is the innermost layer of the oesophagus?
The mucosa (inside lining).
What is the function of the mucosa?
To protect the oesophagus from food damage.
What is the second layer under the mucosa?
The submucosa.
What is inside the submucosa?
Glands and blood vessels.
What is the third layer of the oesophagus wall?
The muscularis (muscle layer).
What is the function of the muscularis layer?
To push food down through the oesophagus.
What is the outermost layer of the oesophagus?
The adventitia (outer covering).
What is the function of the adventitia?
To hold and protect the oesophagus from the outside.
What type of epithelium lines the oesophagus mucosa?
Non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium.
Why is the oesophagus lined with stratified squamous epithelium?
To protect against mechanical damage from food.
What glands are found in the submucosa?
Mucous glands that help lubricate the oesophagus.
What types of muscle are found in the muscularis layer?
Skeletal muscle (upper third), mixed skeletal and smooth muscle (middle third), smooth muscle (lower third).
What is the function of the oesophageal glands?
To secrete mucus that reduces friction and protects the lining.
How is the oesophagus different from the rest of the GI tract in outer covering?
It has adventitia (not serosa) because it is in the neck and thorax, not covered by peritoneum.
Where are lymphatic vessels mainly located in the oesophagus wall?
In the submucosa and adventitia.
What nerve plexus is found in the muscularis layer?
The myenteric (Auerbach’s) plexus, which controls muscle contractions.
What nerve plexus is found in the submucosa?
The submucosal (Meissner’s) plexus, which controls secretions and blood flow.
What type of connective tissue is found in the submucosa?
Loose connective tissue with elastic fibers.
What special feature helps the oesophagus expand during swallowing?
The presence of longitudinal folds in the mucosa and submucosa.
What separates the circular and longitudinal muscle layers in the muscularis?
The myenteric (Auerbach’s) nerve plexus.
What is the role of the circular muscle layer in the oesophagus?
It contracts to narrow the lumen and push food downward.
What is the role of the longitudinal muscle layer in the oesophagus?
It shortens the oesophagus during swallowing.
What kind of mucus do oesophageal glands secrete?
Neutral mucus to lubricate and protect the lining.
