60. Oesophagus - Topography Flashcards
(10 cards)
How long is the adult oesophagus?
About 25 cm long.
Where does the oesophagus start?
At the lower part of the throat (pharynx), behind the trachea, at the level of C6 vertebra.
Through which body regions does the oesophagus pass?
The neck, the chest (thorax), and through the diaphragm.
Where does the oesophagus end?
At the stomach, around the T11 vertebra.
What lies in front of the oesophagus?
The trachea in the neck, and the heart and pericardium in the chest.
What lies behind the oesophagus?
The spine (vertebral column).
What is the name of the opening the oesophagus passes through in the diaphragm?
The oesophageal hiatus.
Why is the oesophageal hiatus important clinically?
Because conditions like hiatal hernia happen there.
At which vertebral level does the oesophagus pass through the diaphragm?
At the level of T10 vertebra (note: it enters the stomach at T11).
Why is knowing the oesophagus topography important for doctors?
To understand problems like blockages, tumors, or hernias affecting nearby structures.
