In North America, France gave its claims to Newfoundland and the Hudson’s Bay Company territories in Rupert’s Land to Great Britain.
The Acadian colony of Nova Scotia was given to Britain. The formerly partitioned island of Saint Kitts was also ceded in its entirety to Britain.
Trade with the Indians was opened to traders of all nations.
France retained some North American possessions, including Île-Saint-Jean (now Prince Edward Island), Saint Pierre and Miquelon, as well as Île Royale (now Cape Breton Island), on which it erected the Fortress of Louisbourg.

What is the seigneurial system?

A

The seigneurial system was an institutional form of land distribution established in New France in 1627 and officially abolished in 1854. In New France, 80 per cent of the population lived in rural areas governed by this system of land distribution and occupation.

Who was Jean Talon?

A

Talon attempted to change the economic base of the colony from fur-trading to agriculture, but found this could not be accomplished without a larger population.

Talon arranged for settlers to come to New France, including over 800 women known as the filles du roi – the king’s daughters.
