Synapsis
Synapsis – the state of homologous chromosomes laying side by side during Prophase I of meiosis.
Chiasmata
contact points between chromatids of homologous chromosomes
Crossing over
the process during meiosis in which chromatids break and re-join onto other chromatids, resulting in chromatids swapping genes at the same loci.
Recombination
breaking and re-joining of pieces of chromosome during crossing over leading to a new combination of alleles.
Law of segregation
the principle that half the gametes formed during meiosis contain one member of each gene pair and half contain the other pair.
Law of independent assortment
the principle that genes on different homologous chromosomes separate independently into gametes during meiosis.
Non-disjunction
the failure of paired chromatids in mitosis or homologous in meiosis to separate and go to opposite poles.
Zygote
The diploid cell that results from the fusion of two haploid gametes
