6.4 - Meiosis Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is the first part of meiosis
4 stages
Chromosomes get ready and swap pieces (this is called crossing over).
Pairs of chromosomes line up in the middle.
The pairs are pulled apart to opposite sides.
Two new cells start to form.
Whats the second part of meiosis
4 stages
Chromosomes get ready again in both new cells.
Chromosomes line up in the middle.
The chromosome copies are pulled apart
Two more cells form, giving a total of 4 cells.
What are mitosis and meiosis’ purposes
Mitosis is growth, repair, making identical cells
meiosis is making sperm and egg cells (gametes)
How many divisions does mitosis and meiosis have
Mitosis has 1 division
Meiosis has 2 divisions
What type of daughter cells are made
in mitosis daughter cells are identical
in meiosis daughter cells are genetically different
How many daughter cells do mitosis and meiosis produce
mitosis produces 2 daughter cells
meiosis produces 4 daughter cells
What does the term ‘haploid’ mean?
A cell that only has half the normal amount of genetic material
