Liver and respiration! Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is metabolism?
Metabolism is all the chemical reactions in your body that keep you alive and active.
What are catabolic reactions?
give e.g
Catabolic reactions break down large molecules into smaller ones and release energy.
e.g digestion.
What is lactic acid and when is it produced?
Lactic acid is made in muscles during intense exercise when there isn’t enough oxygen.
How does the liver break down lactic acid?
The liver takes lactic acid from the blood and converts it back to glucose using oxygen.
Why does the liver need oxygen to break down lactic acid?
Oxygen is needed to make energy (ATP) in the liver cells, which powers the conversion of lactic acid back to glucose.
What is the Cori cycle?
The Cori cycle is the process where lactic acid from muscles is sent to the liver, turned into glucose, and sent back to muscles.
What happens during anaerobic respiration?
When there’s not enough oxygen, muscles make energy by turning glucose into lactic acid.
What is oxygen debt?
Oxygen debt is the extra oxygen your body needs after exercise to clear lactic acid and restore energy
How does the liver remove lactic acid (big q)
Blood stream takes la to liver
In liver, LA is converted (oxidized) to pyruvate.
Pyruvate is then used in gluconeogenesis to make glucose.
Glucose can be stored as glycogen in the liver and muscles.
When muscles need energy, glycogen is broken down back into glucose.
Glucose in muscles is converted into pyruvate via glycolysis.
Pyruvate enters aerobic respirationto produce energy (ATP).
